Pipelines - Here, There, Everywhere?
Pipeline Transport
Pipeline transport is the transportation of goods through a pipe. Liquids and gases are mostly transported but sometimes solids can also be transported. Dmitri Mendeleev first suggested using a pipeline in 1863.
Many types of fluids are transported by pipes. Some examples are oil, biofuels, hydrogen, ammonia, water, beer, etc.
Ammonia for example is highly toxic. It is one of the most toxic substance to be transported through pipelines. One example of ammonia pipeline is the Ukrainian Transammiak line connecting the TogliattiAzot facility in Russia to the exporting Black Sea-port of Odessa.
Germany is most known for its beer culture. Some bars in Germany are interconnected by a beer pipeline. These pipelines are connected to football stadiums. A beer pipeline called "Thor" also exists in Denmark.
Water transport in pipelines are used in giving drinking water to every household in every country. It is also used in irrigation in farms when it needs to go over hills or where channels of water are poor choices due to pollution.
To transport coal, a slurry pipeline is used. At the end of the pipeline, the material is dried. One example of a slurry pipeline is in Minas-Rio mine to a port in Acu, Brazil.
More than a thousand years ago, there were no pipelines. People are really creative and innovative to produce this revolutionary technique to transport substances. Imagine there are no pipelines, no flush in the restroom, no tap water, etc. Thanks to engineers, pipelines are made and improved to our daily necessity.
